Nursery

The purpose of the nursery class is to help children learn the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and live it. The nursery class should help the children increase their understanding of and love for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, have positive experiences in a Church setting, and grow in feelings of self-worth.

All I can say about the new Nursery Lesson book is WOW, it is great! I love how online it offers the pictures to print and all the info right at your finger tips!

General Ideas

  • Here is how our Nursery schedule goes::
11:20 - 11:35 Welcome (which is stuff like: books, puzzles, play dough, water paints, file folders etc)
    11:35 - 11:50 Snack Time
    11:50 - 12:00 Lesson
12:00 - 12:10 Activity ( handout that goes with lesson)
at this time we open the two according doors that divided our three Nursery's and have playtime together)
    12:10 - 12:45 Play Time (toys, parachute, bubbles )
    12:45 - 12:50 Clean Up
    12:50 - 1:00 Singing / Closing Time

  • Use coffee filter papers instead of napkins, the kids love the fact that they are like bowls and the snacks stay in them instead of fall of the napkin! And they are really cheap!

  • We bought sippy cups, we write the names of the kids on the lids so we knows who cups is who's, and the older one's like to pick a color, we do have to wash them weekly, but it is well worth it, we don't have big spills any more, just drips.

  • Take a picture of each of the kids and put them on poster for each door, the kids love to see them self's and show others about them and their classroom.

  • This year we made a picture of a garden, and put their faces in the middle of each flower, they now pick their picture, and then plant them back in another "garden" in the classroom, this garden is in front of the temple

  • For the sake of the Nursery Leaders, see if you can have your Nursery in rooms with the accordion doors, start with playtime with all kids together, then shut the doors and have lessons, snacks, activity, or what ever else you do, then the last 15 minutes or so, open the doors again and have singing time and or bubbles until the end, this gives the leaders the chance to visit with other adults and it breaks up the time for the adults and kids, plus gives more room!

  • Have an extra Nursery Leader, so you can rotate and every one can go to regular class every few months, you would not want to start this until the kids are use to the extra nursery worker,

"SUPPLY BOX "

ALTERNATIVE TO PLAY DOUGH

"We have three nursery's, I have put together three different plastic boxes together, and place it in each nursery every Sunday. This way every thing that the nursery leader might need will be right there right when they need it.
Some of the things I put thing in the box are:
~ masking tape
~ clear tape
~ kids scissors
~ glue sticks
~ Baby Wiped
~ Hand sanitizer
~ stickers to give to each kid if needed
~ stapler
~ pen
~ pencils
~ Crayons

"Here is an alternative to play dough. I like it because it doesn't get as messy, and the children are fascinated with the texture. We call it GAK. Here is the recipe:
In one bowl mix the following:
2 cups Elmer's Glue
1 1/2 cups warm water
several drops of food coloring to desired color
In another bowl mix:
1 1/2 cups water
4 teaspoons Borax soap (20 Mule Team Laundry Booster)
Combine the two bowls together. At first the mixture is very stringy. Kneading it will work it to the right consistency. If you store it in an air tight container in the refrigerator it will last for months. We play with GAK using cookie cutters and rolling pins. you can roll it like a snake and even cut it with scissors."

Door Signs and Poems that can be used in Nursery

Noah and his animals
Love to run and play
But when their noses start to run
They choose to stay away.
They do not want the others
To get their germs you see
They want to be kind to all their friends
Who come to Nursery!
~by Melanie Walthall

"Please take a little peek into our nursery,
We are having lot's of fun as you can plainly see.
But if we spot our Mom or our brother or our Dad,
We might feel that we miss you and get so very sad.
So peek in and observe, but do it carefully,
And we will gladly stay till the end of primary Nursery

Nursery is a great big melting pot
Where your little one is welcome
But germs are not.
If your child shows signs of a cold or flu
It's best that he or she stay with you!"
By: MICHELLE, TAYLORSVILLE, UTAH

Our Nursery was great and we had a fun day.
We had a lesson and stories. We got to sing and to play.
To keep Nursery running smooth until the very last,
Find your little one's card then slide it under the door, fast.
We'll get your child ready, we know just what to do,
And we'll bring you your little angel while keeping the others happy, too."

"Jack and Jill went up the hill,
Off to Nursery when they were ill.
But germs are something we don't want to share,
To the children and leaders, it would be unfair.
For a healthy nursery, here's the trick,
Keep your children home when they are sick."

Jack and Jill.PDF

Mary had a little lamb,
She also had the flu.
And when she left the nursery,
The others had it, too.
So anytime your child is sick
Please keep him home with you;
Then the children in our nursery
Will be happy and healthier too.

Nursery Music

Here are some visually aids for music time, I am working on more. So check back soon.

This one, I cut out each bus, then laminated them, then put ring in the top and I turn each page as we sing. Or you could have kids help you by holding different one.

Wheels on the bus.PDF

This one I also cut out and laminated, you can cut a hole in her stomach and have each of the kids put in the animal that she ate.

Here is a "Wheels on the Bus" visual aid that I made. I am the primary chorister in our ward and find that our nursery kids react much better to something they can see, so I thought I'd share it.

Music Ideas

I have a list of songs that I pick from when I sub for the music leader. I posted them to the files section. I also just posted a turkey with feathers to the file section that you can use for picking songs.

I try to do mostly songs from the Primary songbook, but the kids do love Teasing Mr. Crocodile and Insy Weensy Spider (with spider rings).

I have visuals for Teasing Mr. Crocodile that I printed from www.preschoolprintables.com They have a felt board story of it. I enlarged it to fit half a poster board and laminated all the pieces. I pick one child to be the crocodile and then let another pick a monkey off the tree.

I also made a big sun with a circle cut out it says "Jesus wants me for a Sunbeam" around it.  I have a child hold it up the his face when we sing Jesus wants me for a Sunbeam.

I have made Popsicle sticks that have pictures of Mother, Father, Sister, Brother to use with "Happy Family".

I have also used an old men's tie and let one of the children wear it for "Daddy's Homecoming" or "I hope they call me on a mission".

I always try to have my song picking visual correspond to what they are learning about in class or something seasonal.  ie.(Flowers, Pumpkins, Snowmen, Stars, Leaves.)

I have also used a Mr. Potato Head for picking songs. You could use it anytime of year, but it goes well with the I am thankful for eyes, hands, etc lessons.  I let a child pick a piece out of a bag and put it on Mr. Potato Head.  Then, we sing a song.  The kids really love that one.

Another song game my kids like to play is "5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed".  For this one I bought a 6 foot parachute from a school supply store.  You can use a twin sheet instead.  I have a stuffed animal monkey that we bounce on the parachute as we sing the song.
The monkey falls off a lot, but we just toss it back on and keep singing.  This is also a great end of the day activity when you are waiting for parents to come.

I am going to have the kids play Pin the Tag on the Missionary for Sunday's Lesson on "I Belong to the Church of Jesus Christ".  You could use that for picking songs.  Just make a bunch of tags, or cut the missionary into parts and have them build a missionary to pick songs.  You can download the graphics from
http://www.ldssplash.com/fhe/fhe_games/family_home_evening_games.htm

Good Luck!  You have a great calling!  Music is one of my favorite
parts of nursery.

Lovin' it in nursery,
Kayla
