Day in the Life of Joseph Smith

This great idea was sent to me by Sarah Skabelund Ray Ward Primary- Gilbert Greenfield Stake

THANKS!!

Attached are the sheets that I did for the scripture translation (picture is  for younger children to color, scripture for older children to do.)  The cut outs for Station 7 (Joseph Smith in Liberty/Carthage Jail).  Also, for the 1st Vision, I did a short video from the new restoration video we got last year, and handed out book marks.  Deseret Book had 10 for $3.00 and it had
Joseph in the grove and said, "I will follow God's plan for me"  They are made just for this year's primary theme.  Another thing that we did was for  the digging, I had them search for Rolo's and Starbursts (we have a lot of allergies in our primary).  We blindfolded the older children and gave them all spoons to dig.  They all thought that was the greatest!  Some even wanted to put dirt in their bags.  We had our Ward missionaries do the missionary section and hand out pass along cards.  At the end, we had the Bishop talk about the priesthood, since that was the only thing that was not on the list.  I am also attaching the template for the name badges printed on  2" x 4" stickers.

We did this at our church, and I put the sections where it was serious in  rooms, and the fun ones in the cultural hall.  We had so many compliments on this activity.

Choose Your Own Adventure

Printable in DOC: Choose Your Own Adventure

Ideas modified from: Choices and Gospel Guideposts: By Laurel Rohlfing Friend, Feb. 1989, 12

Choices! Choices! Life is full of choices! Should you wear your blue shirt or your red one? Should you play a game or do your work? Should you watch TV or read a book?

Making choices is a very important part of life on earth. Choices are part of the adventure of coming to earth to live. Your right to choose was given to you when you lived in Heaven with Heavenly Father and Jesus. Heavenly Father held a council with you and all His other spirit children and presented an important plan. If you followed His plan, you would come to earth, receive a body, and be tested to see if you would choose to keep His commandments. If you did, you would be able to live with Him again.

Satan wanted to change the plan. He said that he would not give people any choices. He would force everyone to keep the commandments. Jesus liked Heavenly Father’s plan. He wanted people to be able to choose for themselves how they would live. He said that He would come to earth and be our Savior and Guide. Everyone who lives on earth chose to follow Jesus and Heavenly Father’s plan.

Now that we are here on earth, the choices we make here, every day determine where we are going and where we will end up. The choices we make today about clothing, friends, movies and music can help us to stay on the path, or lead us away from the happiness and closer to Satan. We are all on the right path right now and by choosing the right and avoid temptation, we can continue to progress so that we can live with Heavenly Father again. Our Heavenly Father wants us to make good choices and helps us choose the right by giving us the Holy Ghost to help lead and guide us.  He also has given us teachers and Priesthood leaders to help us stay on the path and get back on the path if we make a wrong choice.

Today we are going to hear about several different situations and make several choices.  Some of us will choose the right, some of us will become confused, and need guidance to follow the right path back to our Heavenly Father.

*Notes:  The numbers listed below are the room numbers in our church building.  If the children made correct choices the rooms were in a straight line, but if not the rooms jumped from one side of the building to another.  Before each situation we read the scripture 3 Nephi 27:33 and then during the debriefing at the end of the activity we talked about how choosing the right was the straight and narrow path and that is was easier and a lot less work than running all over the building to keep up the others.  The repentance group would have to move faster than all the rest or would continually be trying to catch up.   (Some children consistently made the wrong choice just to be funny I’m sure, but we always had at least a few in the wrong choice group.)

Situations

1 Your friends have invited you to a movie. When you get there, you realize that it is not a good, wholesome one. Your friends decide to see it anyway and you want to be part of the group.

If you decide to go to the movie-just this one time, go to __112________

If you decide to convince your friends to go to a more appropriate movie, go to _108_____

Be faithful, and yield to no temptation (D&C 9:13)

Hint: 3 Nephi 27:33 Jesus said unto the disciples: Enter ye in at the strait gate; for strait is the gate and narrow is the way which leads to life.

2 Your friends have been asking you to try smoking just once to see what it is like.  They have promised that if it try it once you will be cool and they won’t ever ask you to do it again. They promise it will make you feel strong to have tried it .

5.  You really want to buy a new video game and you have been working really hard to earn extra money, but it is taking a long time. Your friends have a great idea about how to earn some extra money.  They say you can just go door-to-door and tell people that you are raising money to help some school kids. Your friends say that they have done it before and everyone in your neighborhood wanted to help so they got a lot of money.  The best part you get to keep all the money and you don’t even have to lie.  You just don’t tell the people that the money is to help you get a video game.

Love

This was shared by the Pecan Creek Ward, Queen Creek AZ East Stake

THANKS FOR SHARING!!!

We did a very easy and fun activity in February centered on Love, but it could be used any time of year.  We also had a HUGE primary at the time – 240 kids.  Thankfully we split  a month later.

We divided the kids into 4 groups/rooms:  Love your Neighbor, Love your Family, Love Yourself, and Love the Savior.

In Love Your Neighbor, the kids played Pictionary on the chalkboard.  We had a list of different things they could do to serve their neighbor (Take them dinner, mow the lawn, water the plants, etc) Older kids did the drawing.

In Love Your Family, the kids colored a service coupon book.  The idea was to do an act of service, secretly, and then leave behind the coupon.  For example, one had a picture of a bed on it and read, “I made your bed for you because I love you.”

In Love Yourself, the kids decorated and ate a heart shaped cookie.  This was done outside.

In Love the Savior, we told/acted out the story “My Friend Linda” (Heidi Renouf Brisco, “My Friend Linda,” Friend, Feb. 2006, 36).  The kids discussed ways that they could show love to the Savior.  There are probably a ton of different stories or things you could do in this room to teach ‘Love for the Savior’

The best thing we did for this activity was to mix the age groups.  That way we had kids that could actually draw for the Pictionary game and the big ones helped the little ones decorate the cookies.

Primary QT Activities from Mickey Herrin

We had a quarterly activity that was very successful.  A month before the activity, I grouped the children

(mostly by classes) into 6 groups and chose music that I thought they would like.  Then I developed

Simple dance steps with simple props.  Next, I called the teachers and planned a time to go to their

Home and teach them the dance for their group.  We did the girls camp version of Do as I’m Doing for

The Sunbeams, “Never Tell a Lie” pantomimed for the CTR-5s, A cool version of Eency Weency Spider

For the rest of the CTRs, Girls Just Wanna have Fun (using streamers) for the Valiant girls, Electricity- a robot-sounding

Song for the boys (using glow-in-the-dark sticks), and square dance music for the rest of the Valiants.

That morning, we met together where I taught them a song about using your talents and talked about

Not hiding them, etc.  I told them the story in the New Testament about multiplying your talents.

Then each group went to their own room where the teachers taught them the dance for

About ½ hour.

Next we all met in the gym and put on the numbers for each other while we ate popcorn.  Then, the

Parents came and we put it on again for them—the kinks kind of worked out from doing it twice.

We had signs for each group that some of them decorated in the classroom that introduced each

Group and their number.  We also sang our talent song for the parents to start it off.  A couple of boys

Didn’t want to participate, so I asked them to pull curtains and work with the lighting.

The kids had a lot of fun with this, and the teachers enjoyed it too.  I baked them each a loaf of

Bread for their efforts.

Adventures of the Treasure seekers..

Thanks to Brenda Huffman for sharing this idea!

We sole part of this idea from a VBS (Vacation Bible School) It's called Adventures of the Treasure seekers.. here is a link to the website & they have free decorating ideas & clip art.
Basicly the church is decorated like an archaeological dig site & the kids are archaeologist looking for God's promises. http://www.cokesburyvbs.com/index.php

We choose  5 classes & playing in sand or bird seed for the sunbeams
Each class will talk about the subject read the promise & do an activity
Word of wisdom - Relay races w/plastic food
Sabbath day - Sunday activity book
Treasure hunt - words of the prophets
Scriptures - Plaster paris w/ hinden toys inside  you need tarps to cover the room or go outside.
Rainbow - Art project (glue on colored sand)
We are having corn dogs, chips, & dirt pudding for lunch
We will also hand out the journal of promises at the end

Missionary Hour

And yet another great idea by crazy8 from our message board!

We took turns having each class go with the sister missionaries door to door asking for a donation of a canned good to donate to our city's food pantry. When they would give the children the can or cans, we would thank them and give them a Pass Along Card. It made the children feel good by doing a service for the community, and to feel like a missionary. We usually had the missionaries stand on the sidewalk, and the teacher and children would go up and say," Our church class is doing a service project for the Food Pantry. Would you like to donate a canned good?" We did not want the neighbors to feel like we were 'tricking' them in some way. We focused on the "service" part, but felt good thanking them with the Pass Along Card. We had a class go every other week for our "Missionary Hour".

Promises from Heavenly Father

Thanks to Sarah Skabelund for this great idea

We just did a great activity that is really easy and quite inexpensive to do.  (We have 85 children in our primary.)

Our theme was, "Promises from Heavenly Father"  It goes along with the theme from the Primary for 2006.  It centered on Noah's ark.  We had the children come in and while we were getting everyone there we had them trace their hands on colored paper and write their name and a what they were going to promise Heavenly Father that year.  The older children helped the younger ones.  The only thing I wish we did different was make sure there were more even colors.  We had 19 blue and 2 red at the end.  While everything else was going on, we cut out the hands and made it into a "rainbow of promises".  It is now in the primary room as a reminder.

Our four rooms were:
1-  Animal relay race:  We asked the children to donate new or gently used animals that we then donated to a fire station.  We collected over 100, and the fire station was excited.  They hand the animals out when children are in car accidents or other situations where they may need an extra hug.  For this relay we put all the animals into a kiddie pool at one end.  At the other end we had two rubbermaid bins with pictures of arks at the front.  We had to save the animals by taking them from the pool to the ark.  We put masking tape down the middle to form two lanes to run in.  They did the races forward, three-legged, backward, and a lot of other ways.  It was really fun.  At the end, we gave them all a finger puppet from Oriental Trading Co.  http://www.orientaltrading.com/otcweb/application?namespace=search&origin=searchMain.jsp&event=button.search&Ntt=39%2F523&Ntk=all&Ntx=mode%2Bmatchallpartial&N=0&x=2&y=11

2- Don't eat the animals:  This is like Don't eat Pete game.  I had a card with 12 animals on it and laminated it.  Then I got gummy bears from Sam's Club and you place a gummy bear on each animal.  Send one child out of the room and pick one of the animals.  The child then comes back in and starts to pick off the bears one by one.  They are trying to get as many off the board.  When they get to the animal that was picked everyone yells, "DON'T EAT THE ANIMAL!"  Then it is the next person's turn. At the end of this we gave everyone a board game and 15 gummy bears to play at home.

3-  Animal Matching:  We had 12 pairs of animals and they matched them together.  At the end we gave them a small set of 6 pairs.

4-  Animal Sand Art:  We had pictures of animals, and water down some elmers glue.  Get some black foam paint brushes and put glue on the animal.  Then we had colored sand that they put on the animal where they wanted it.

We handed out some really cute animal bags at the beginning for them to carry everything around in.  Also from Oriental trading Co.

At the end we all met in the cultural hall and we had the bishopric member talk about Noah and the importance of promises and the rainbow.  We then served rainbow sherbet and animal cookies.

It was a huge hit with the kids.  We had the groups originally go for 20 minutes, but we would shorten that to 12-15.  Everyone was getting anxious to move on by about that time.

Hope this helps someone.  We found the animal pictures in a the Finch Family File Folder Fun book 2 http://deseretbook.com/store/product?sku=3110969

Primary Activity: Plan of Salvation

Here is a GREAT Primary Quarterly activity given to us by scrazy8 on our message board!! Thanks for sharing

This is a Primary Quarterly Activity that we had a lot of fun doing. We had about 20 nonmember friends attend and everyone had a great time learning the Plan of Salvation.

We met in the cultural hall for each stage of life.
We had a poster with each stage of life written on it that they would see upon entering the cultural hall each time.
We started out by saying that when the lights go off and then on, we stop what we are doing and line up at a certain door. (the door closest to the drinking fountains). They would then walk out and down the hallway and into the other door, back into the cultural hall. And that is when they would see the poster with the name on it…..”Pre earth life” “earth life” “death” “spirit world” “judgment” “celestial glory”.
We told them that we would be going through the plan of happiness that our Heavenly Father has prepared for us. And after each activity, we would explain the meaning.

First. PRE EARTH LIFE: I had all the children sitting in front of me. I told them that I would be giving them something to eat and they had to close their eyes while eating it. Some might enjoy it, and some might not like it at all.” Are you willing to do this?” I then had my teenage helpers hand each child a Nilla wafer, while their eyes were closed. If they peeked, I did not make a big deal over it. My helpers each had a baggie of wafers. When they were through, I asked them if they liked it? And if it was a hard thing to do to TRUST me? I then likened it to when our Heavenly Father talked to each of us before coming to earth. We did not know exactly how life would be, but we were willing to put our trust in him, sort of like putting your trust in me that I would not give you something totally awful to eat!
Now, the lights would go off and on again. The children would line up at the door, with my helpers guiding them. They also knew that they had to be quiet. They would walk down the hall and back into EARTH LIFE.

EARTH LIFE
We played Simon Says. The first game was a practice, and then I started slow and went faster. My helpers would tap them on the shoulder if they got out. We played for about 10 minutes. I told them that one important reason why Jesus came to earth was for us to follow His example and do what He would do, sort of like how you would do what I would say and do in Simon Says. LIGHTS! Walk in and out into…..

DEATH
We played the game “Stuck in the Mud”. It is like Freeze Tag. We had about 5 people who would tag the others and if you got tagged you had to freeze until another player crawled under your legs to unfreeze you. We made sure to go over the rule of not running into people and not to play too rough. The reason we played “Stuck in the Mud” is because our bodies go into the ground when we die. LIGHTS! Walk in and out into….

SPIRIT WORLD
We played Musical Chairs. We had two different rows because we had about 70 kids. We again enforced the rule about not playing rough, but having fun. We played to the Primary song “Family History” (Geneology). We told them that when our spirits go to the Spirit World, we are reunited with loved ones, etc. LIGHTS! Walk in and out into….

JUDGMENT
We split the children in half and gave half of them a little fuzzy pom pom and told them to each give their fuzzy to a child sitting on the other side of the room and pay that person a compliment. Then we had that side give their fuzzy to a child on the other side and give them a compliment. We will be judged for the things that we do while living on earth and we want to do lots of good things and to be kind to others. LIGHTS! Walk in and out into

CELESTIAL KINGDOM
Here we gave them each a chocolate heart representing the love of our Heavenly Father. That our goal is to live with Him and Jesus Christ again.
We then went through the Plan of Salvation with the cut outs that I had and that we were giving to each child to take home. I put each piece on the chalk board and briefly explained, again, each phase of life and included the Resurrection that we did not do a game for.
Before this day, I had young women come over to my home and help me cut and color 70 plan of salvation lessons for one of their goals. We had fun doing it together and it helped me get to know them better. I got the cutouts out of a sharing time book: Primary Partners Sharing Time Treasures, “My Family Can Be Forever” page 23, #15. Along with that, I typed out a page explaining this plan and I put scriptures from the Bible backing this up.
We knew that we were going to have many nonmembers with us and we wanted their parents to know what we were doing and learning. We had a lot of fun!
