Youth Leadership

Rise to Your Call

Elder Henry B. Eyring
Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

Young Women is a time set apart for growth and preparation. Leadership in the Church helps each young woman come unto Christ. Through leadership and service, young women:
  • Gain testimonies of their identity as daughters of God.
  • Have opportunities to qualify for and rely upon the Spirit.
  • Prepare to serve in their homes and in the Church.
  • Keep the covenants they have made and prepare for temple covenants.

How to Use a Presidency Meeting Agenda

Purpose
To organize and effectively use the time allotted for the presidency meeting.

Prayer and Scripture
The scripture invites the Spirit and readies the presidency for the prayer. Before the meeting the president will need to assign the scripture and prayer to a presidency member. The scripture and prayer may be assigned to one individual or two separate individuals.

Minutes
Read by the secretary, the minutes help the presidency review previous discussions. Changes or additions to the minutes can be made when they are read. The secretary may use the agenda to record minutes.

Leadership Training
The training sessions of the presidency should last about five minutes. Although the lesson may be taught by either adult leader, the leadership handbook indicates that the advisor teaches leadership skills, while the adult presidency member implements those skills.

Calendar
Quickly reviewing the dates on the calendar can promote long-term planning

Business
Review assignments for immediate activities, begin planning details for upcoming activities, and evaluate past activities. Any planning should include individual needs, activation plans, personal  progress and service. Evaluate and follow-up on any class goals or projects (ie. Lights out, class service project, etc.)

Follow-up
The secretary should keep her copies of the Agenda for reference and future meetings.

Conducting a Meeting

Well conducted meetings are more efficient and effective.

1.Prepare an agenda. Schedule a room in which to meet and start on time. The secretary helps prepare the agenda and keeps minutes.
2. Contact those who will take part and make sure they know the order of the meeting.  Arrange for the opening and closing prayers. Before the meeting begins, invite all to take their places and be reverent.
3. Where appropriate, arrange for appropriate prelude music to be played at least five minutes before the meeting starts. Ensure that the songs are appropriate and that the chorister and accompanist are prepared.
4. Arrive early and make sure everything is ready for the meeting.
5. Know the names of any guests and introduce them to the group. Welcome bishopric  members, stake visitors, or other visitors by name and introduce them to your group.
6. When conducting meetings other than class presidency or other small group planning meetings, a brief prayer meeting should be held, whenever possible, for all participants. This is where the last minute details can be checked and a prayer given to invite the Spirit to be with you in the meeting to follow.
7. Plan and practice what will be said in greeting. Remember that the greeting sets the tone  for the meeting and is a vital part of the agenda.

CLASS PRESIDENCY RESPONSIBILITIES

Working with their Young Women/Young Men adviser, the class presidency helps plan a program of activities to reinforce the Young Women/Young Men program and to reach every girl/boy in the class. Each member of a class presidency needs to prayerfully seek the guidance of your Father in Heaven in his/her calling.
Under the direction of the Young Women/Young Men adviser the class presidency-
1. Meets regularly in a class presidency meeting to prepare an agenda for class meetings and activities, make assignments, and learn leadership skills.
2. Watch over each class member by doing such things as-
A. Visit, fellowship and activate all Young Women/Young Men within the class.
B. Reporting on the status of each class member to a member of the Bishopric.
3. Plan and help conduct opening exercises of the Sunday Young Women/Young Men meeting. Members of the class presidency should also take turns conducting class meetings.
4. Plan and implement activities to reinforce Young Women/Young Men Values taught in Sunday lessons. All activities should help Young Women/Young Men use gospel principles in their lives, learn skills, develop talents, practice social graces and strengthen family relationships. Activities should also help Young Women/Young Men share the gospel and learn to reach out to others in loving service.
5. Help each class member achieve his/her personal and group goals.
6. Work with the class secretary to keep records and reports current.
In addition, the class president represents the needs and interests of his/her class in bishopric youth committee meetings.

Ideas for class Presidency Meetings

These meetings should be held once a month for about one hour or twice a month for about 30 minutes each. (More often if needed)

1. Be on time.

2. Be prepared. (Bring paper, pencil, calendar, and assignments completed.)

3. Stick to the business at hand- do not use this time for socializing or wander for the agenda.

4. Secretary should be prepared with an agenda, calendar and all necessary information. (If needed
*she should call adult advisors or class president ahead of time to get necessary info.)

5. Have & Stick to the prepared agenda.

6. Discuss upcoming events in detail. Make assignments and delegate.

7. Be prepared to offer ideas to help activities be a success. Think positively and creatively.

8.Discuss any problems the girls might be having as it relates to the welfare of the class. Be confidential. Be loving and not critical in your discussion of the members of your class.

9. Discuss Telephone Assignments.

10.Each presidency member has been previously assigned a member of the class to phone weekly regarding activities and Lights Out, thus fellowshipping all class members.

11. Cards, letters, or visits are excellent ways to communicate love and concern.

12. Review the assignments made in the meeting.

13. Remember to ask, don't demand, someone specifically to say the prayer. If possible ask ahead of time, and don't ask for a volunteer.

Delegating

There are many responsibilities associated with a calling, and others, besides the class presidency, can assist and benefit when they are involved.

1.Know your class members and the task that needs to be done. Select the individual whom you feel could best fulfill or accomplish the task.
2. Explain the total project and what you want to happen.
3. State the assignment clearly.
4. Let her know how important her part is and how it relates to the total project.
5. Get her acceptance and have her suggest what she will do to fill the assignment.
6. Decide together when the assignment is to be completed.
7. Write the assignment down and have her write it down.
8. Explain that she is responsible for the assignment and that you will ask her on her progress.
9. Offer help and encouragement throughout the course of the assignment until it is *completed.
10. Review the assignment and express thanks.

What do you know!!

Have the Presidency fill this out for each member of the class and see what they know!
