Pinewood Derby

A fun activity that we did last year and the kids want to repeat is a Pinewood Derby. We had each class/quorum enter two cars. we used the week before to paint, etc. We have an awesome track that the Cubs use, so it is all digitally scored. The winners for the night were the young women, a pink Barbie car and a Sponge Bob car. The guys who had all the technical stuff done and the most aerodynamic design were left in the dust. It was a blast. Good fellowshipping activity, even though it was full of competition.

We just had a GREAT Joint Activity. The teachers did an Extreme Pinewood Derby. The cars were made at the activity. Each class was given 2 pinewood derby cars to decorate. There was no paint on the cars you could just hot glue or tape things. You could cut the cars if you wanted or even sand them down (not a lot of time for this). There were some things supplied to decorate with. Popsicle sticks, army figurines, mini pom poms, plastic bugs and markers. You could bring whatever else you wanted to decorate with. Each
class supplied their own glue guns. During the time they were decorating the cars they had to come up with a cheer for their group and decorate a poster with their team name on it. The cars were great! You could definitely tell the girls from the guys. One of the funniest ones had a soup can tied to it. Most everyone glued coins to theirs for weight. Then the races began. They used a pinewood derby race schedule so that everyone raced fairly (i.e. the same amount and in different lanes). The points were given out as follows:
25 pts. for the best decorated car, 25 pts. for best poster, 25 pts. for best cheer (and how much they cheered during the races), 25 pts. for the fastest car. The kids all had a great time. It was funny because during the races money was flying off cars and they were falling apart. The Deacons took first place but the Mia Maids took second and the Beehives took 3rd! The Priests came in at the beginning telling everyone how great they were and they were going to win. We laughed when the girls cars kept beating their cars!
