Seeking After Treasures – YW 2011 Year theme idea
Shared by Loni Stookey
Argh! This year, we are bein’ pirates, seeking after treasures! Things that are virtuous! Lovely! Praiseworthy and of Good Report! Our lovely land-lubbers are going to be taught to find the good things in the world, and to create good things in the world! Our activities will be focused around “Doing Good to all Men”, and how a good treasure seeker is “Honest, True, Chaste, Benevolent and Virtuous!” We will introduce the theme at New Beginnings this month, make our new Beehive walk the plank, while we leaders sing a pirate song and do a funny skit (yet to be written). For Camp, we are burying treasure chests or golden plates for the lasses to dig up (They will have rocks with their names on top so they know who’s is who’s). The book (We did wooden golden plates one year) or treasure chest will have their parent’s testimonies, letters from their leaders, the bishop, etc and will have everything for their solo time, which they will depart to once they dig up their treasure. I know this is sparatic and unfinished, I just wanted to share it ASAP since I know everyone is trying to figure out what to do for the year. Argh!
Loni has sent in the skit they used for this night!
Hello! Here is the skit our leaders are doing for New Beginnings with the Pirate theme for 2011 that I sent a couple weeks ago. We are making a huge pirate ship out of refigerator boxes and a pirate ship cake and meatballs and sandwiches with pirate flag toothpicks, we have amazing leaders! Anyway, thought someone might be able to use this. Couple other ideas, Golden Plates could be the gold some pirates seek emphasising seeking the good things from the scriptures. Gold is the value color for virtue, and virtue is mentioned twice in the 13th article of faith.
Have fun!

Where’s the Treasure?
BH6th Ward New Beginnings Leader Skit
January 2011
By Loni Stookey
Mel: Hoist the colors, maties! It’ s going to be a rough sail!
All: Aye Aye!
Tia: (Super Cheesy and with a salute) Alrighty Captain!
(Mel “Sails” the ship while someone sprays water from a spray bottle or throws blue confetti over the bow of the ship at her. Tia and Angela put up flags)
Tiffany: (Loud whisper to everyone else, scared the captain will hear) Ahoy! It seems we have misplaced our treasure chest!
Taryn: Blast treasure burying!
All: Where’s the gold? Who took the gold? Who Buried it last? Who was watching?(ETC. ETC. looking around the ship panicking, petty fighting breaking out)
Loni: Did you look in the stern?
Emily: Did you look on the poop deck?
Mel: Argh! What be the situation, maties?!
Angela: The flags are all here captain, but…………(Dramatic pause)
Mel: But what!? You Landlubber!
Taryn: (Scared with Angela hiding behind her now) But we can’t find the treasure!
Mel: (Yelling) But you can’t find the treasure!? The GOLD and the JEWELS!?
Loni: Yes Captain, everything is here, but the treasure!
Mel: Shiver me timbers! We be pirates! We can’t sail without a treasure! We’ve been seeking after those things!
Tiffany: Captain? Can we pillage a village and take THEIR gold and jewels?
Mel: We can steal this kind of gold and jewels! We have to have our own! Arghhhhhh, we must have buried it to keep it safe!
Emily: But we’re gonna need it before we can sail through this storm!
Mel: Aye. Avast ye! And find that treasure! (to Angela) To the crow’s nest!
Angela: Aye Aye Captain! I’ll keep my eye out! (Take out candy eyeball and put on eye patch) And if I see any new pirates, I’ll whistle a merry tune! Like this….(Do something funny) then we’ll find out if the new pirate knows anything about out pirate treasure!
Taryn: Maybe someone Hornswaggled our treasure!
Emily: Hey Captain! How would someone hornswaggle a pirate’s treasure?
(Everyone gather around for story time, get a bear or blankie or popcorn etc.)
Mel: (Intense like a scary story around a camp fire) Well! They sneak it one piece at a time, so you don’t notice.
Loni: Oh, I would notice!
Taryn: (Push me) no you wouldn’t
Angela: Yes she would! (Yelling from the crow’s nest)
(Fighting and bickering breaks out, shoving etc. over the issue)
Mel: Quiet you scurvy dogs! It’s like when someone watches tv or a movie that everyone else watches, and you know the spirit is tellin’ them it’s not ok, but they watch it anyway. That’s how someone starts stealing your treasure…!
Tia: (raises hand) What about when you listen to music, cause you just like the beat, but the song talks about something no respectable pirate should do?
Mel: HORNSWAGGLED! They’re takin’ yer treasure!
Tia: Captain? Why is our gold and jewels so important?
Mel: Why, gold is a pirate’s Virtue! Your purity! You are pirates, but first, you are daughters of a Heavenly Father who loves you! Do you love Him?
All: Aye Captain!
Mel: (go into revival mode- this could all be inappropriate here!) Do you want to live with Him again some day?
All: Aye Captain!
Mel: Then you GOT TO< GOT TO< protect on to your virtue! You must stand as witnesses of God at all times, and in all things and in all places!
Emily: Even school?
Mel: ESPECIALLY SCHOOL! You have to strive to live and protect the YW pirate values, to be able to sail yer ship home! (get out a jewel for each value and hold up)You must have Faith! (AYE) Divine Nature! (AYE) Individual Worth! (Aye) Knowledge! (Aye) Choice and Accountability! (AYE) GoodWorks! (AYE) Integrity! (AYE) and….
All: VIRTUE!
Mel: YES! THAT’S THE GOLD! SAVY?
Angela: (From the crow’s nest) Captain! My eye spies a Lassie that’s never sailed the seas with us before!
Mel: Is she one of ours?
Angela: I can’t know! But she looks to have a treasure!
Mel: (Jumps up fast and furious, trying to balance herself) All hands on deck! (Angela came down, Mel looks through periscope) Well blow me down! Let’s bring her in! (Hands periscope down the line of pirates who all look at Rilee through it)
Mel: If she’s one of us, she’ll know the pirate code, if not, she’ll walk the plank to Davy Jones’ locker!
All: Aye! The locker! (Set out and wander around looking for Rilee while we sing Wizard of oz tune in a 7 dwarfs-style line behind captain)
All: Yo ho ho! Yo ho ho and a couple of La De Da’s. That’s how we sail the day away in the merry old sea…(CUT OFF)
Angela: THAR SHE BLOWS! (Angela, who is right behind Mel, Stops suddenly with arm out so we all bump into each other with other arm POINTING AT RILEE)
Mel: Quick! Bind her with a Hempen Cord, Until we know where her booty lies and see if she knows the code!
(We tie Rilee with a rope like thread on a spool straight down, arms pinned to her side so she can barely walk, maybe she’ll have to hop)
Emily: Now walk!
All: (Sing back in line, walking her to the front of the ship and putting her out on the plank) What do you do with a scurvy pirate? What do you do with a scurvy pirate? What do you do with a scurvy pirate? Make her walk the plank!
Angela: SHARK BAIT! Do ye know the pirate code? Or will ye sleep with the sunbeams tonight?
(Rilee won’t know what we mean)
Mel: Then walk the plank!
Tiffany: Argh! Give her a chance! She looks like she might belong to us!
Loni: Aye! Me thinks yer a smart little thing. I think ye know the code!
Emily: Give her a hint….
Loni: We pirates, believe in being..
Rilee: (Hopefully) Honest?
All: (Shout and scare her) Argh! Honest!
Rilee: True?
All: (If we can, depending on what she does) Argh! True!
(Loni will guide her through)
Tia: The code! The Code! She knows the code!
Angela: Whew! That was a close one! You almost had to walk the plank back to primary!
Taryn: AYE! She knows the code, but before we let her sail with us, she’s got to learn about our ways and make sure she wants to stay with us.
Mel: Captain Sigler is the captain of all personal pirate progress, she’ll be tellin’ what you don’t know about being on our crew. Captain Sigler!
Tiffany: She might change her mind! Keep your swords up Maties! (Rilee stays tied up for all of this)
(Sister Sigler talks-we stay with swords pointed)
Mel: (Suspicious) Argh, now you know about us, but what do we know about you? Any pirate? Any pirate know anything about Rilee? (see if the girls will say anything)
(Then on to these if they are not said: )
Taryn: She’s a blimey fast reader and plays the cello!
Emily: She is great with little buccaneers!
Tiffany: She is very smart and gets really good grades!
Mel: I hear you play a mean game of soccer and volleyball, and just about every other sport….true?
Tia: I know she loves and protects animals.
Angela: She just got her Faith in God award!
Loni: (Other stuff) And I know, Heavenly Father has chosen her, and all of you other pirates, to guard Virtue, Faith, Divine Nature, Individual Worth, Knowledge, Choice and Accountability, Good Works and Integrity, This be the treasure he gave you to protect.
Mel: Shark Bait Hoo Ha Ha!, Do you know where the treasure of gold and jewels be? (She will know where it is)
Mel: Shark Bait, you are our kind of pirate! (Mel turn to crew) All pirates in favor of Shark Bait joining our crew next month, say “AYE”
All: AYE!
Mel: Will you join us? Alright, me hearties! Batten down the hatches! We’ve got our crew, (gesture that the crew includes all the girls) we’ve got our flags! We’ve got our gold and jewels! It’s stormy out here, but we’re stronger than that storm! LET’S SAIL!
Bishop stands and takes over
