Ancestor night
To begin we asked parents ahead of time to give us a story and/or information about an ancestor. Most of our brought stories. We then passed them out to the girls (we sat in a circle) and they took turns reading them in first person. The girls guessed who was the ancestor. Then we flashed the flashlight on whoever got it right putting them in the “spotlight”. It was neat because the girls would talk about the stories after, asking the spotlighted girl more about the story; sometimes even the young women would exclaim, “I never knew that!!” After this we related it to knowing our ancestors by doing our genealogy and what it will be like when we meet them again. We are encouraging them to take their own names to the temple next time. (Another way this could be done is reading the stories behind a sheet and have a sillouette of the reader–wear a bonnet or something.)
Then we made the ice cream. We also had cupcakes which we made flags for. On the flag we wrote the year their ancestor was born; the girls had to find their cupcake by the year that was on it.
It was such a fun night! If anyone has any ideas to add for next time I (or someone else) wants to do an activity like this, I would love it hear it!
