Art Appreciation
Our ward did a combined activity a little over a month ago that was a surprisingly big success. We decided to have an art appreciation night. We decorated the gym like an art musuem – we got art books and made color copies of some well-known and not so well known paintings. We then put them on heavy posterboard and put them around the gym. There were about 25 or 30. Then we had a little test for them. We had the artist’s name on one side and then the name of the painting on the other and they had to try and match them up. In the middle of the gym we had set up refreshments – finger foods (little sausages, cheese, fruit, etc), we had sparkling cider and fun glasses for them to drink out of. They could walk around with their drinks and look at the pictures while they tried to figure out the answers. It was like an opening night for an art exhibit or something. We then took them back to the relief society room and one of our leaders dressed up like Rembrandt and talked about
some of his paintings. When I first heard of this activity, I thought it would bomb. I didn’t think that the youth, especially the boys, would be that interested. But, they absolutely loved it! The boys especially. Just thought I would share one of the most successful activities I have ever been to.
